A below full strength 1st team ran out 2-1 winners this weekend as they took on AFC Ewell. Chris Howard in goal and competitive 1st team debut for Harvey Chowler as he joined makeshift CB Ben Jones and regulars, Clough and Beck in the back line. Sturt, C Stagg, Harris & Flynn made up the midfield with Chart & B Stagg leading the line.
The game started at a fast pace with both team using the ball well and an early shot from the Ewell No7 went just wide of the post but it wasn’t long before the boys in red started shifting through the gears, the O’s had 4 or 5 good chance before they finally took the lead mid way through the 1st half when an uncharacteristic ball over the top from Carl Sturt put Jake Chart in on goal to slot away the opener.
Ewell received a penalty just 5 minutes later which was calmly tuck away with keeper Chris Howard going in the other direction. Ewell moved the ball well in parts but never really tested Howard after that with most of the chances going Oxted’s way.
A second ball over the top put Chart in for his second of the day this time the assist coming straight from the keeper. Howard seeing the high line of Ewell sent Chart chasing to coolie slide the ball under the Ewell keeper.
Manager Dominic Fitzmaurice changed tactics in the second half switching to a 4-4-2 but there was no change in Oxted’s determination. The enthusiastic Oli Beck picked up 2 yellow cards in the second half leaving the O’s to play the last 30 minutes with only 10 men, Fitzmaurice rang in the changes not long after, brining on Hoy, Curtis & Warner who joined straight in with the hard work their team mates were putting in. Warner & Hoy showing their intent early with some hard challenges and Curtis willing to chase anything and everything.
A hero’s performance from the O’s and a well deserved MOTM for Charlie Stagg means 2 wins in 2 for Oxted.
No fixture this weekend but the 1st XI are back the week after at home to new side A.M.Y where we’ll see the return of skipper and vice skipper Staines & Taylor and also Stephen Hodge.
